  1. List the specific talents and experience that you think you would bring to the job of tutor. Highlight those points that you feel might distinguish you from other job candidates.

Rather than a laundry list of talents and experiences, I’d like to highlight just one of each that has shaped who I am and that I believe enable me to make a great tutor.  I hope this is acceptable!

The experience:  Sunday morning.  I am at work as a primary caregiver for two persons with mental disabilities – Dan, an aloof gentleman twice my size who is usually very easygoing and Bob, a chatterbox who loves to help out.  We’re having breakfast, so Dan and Bob have already helped with setting the table, getting condiments and juices, etc.

I’m cooking pancakes made from scratch and bringing them out as they come off the griddle: Dan, then Bob, then Dan, then Bob, then Dan, then Bob.  Three each, and I’m out of batter.

But Dan wants more.  And I suspect he thinks Bob got the better end of the deal, as Bob got the last pancake.  Oh, did I forget to mention?  Dan is a deaf-mute.  Communication is through body language and a limited sign language.  Dan’s becomes very communicative – he wants more!  I do my best to say there’s no more – I show him Bob’s empty plate and the dirty, empty pan.

Unsatisfied, he becomes angry and moments later I find myself on my knees with a welt on my neck and my ripped shirt in Dan’s hands.  Luckily, Bob intervenes (and also loans me a t-shirt!).

The lesson I learned?  Communication is very, very hard!  It’s not just you talking (or gesturing), it’s the other people receiving, as well.  And since people listen and understand in very different ways, you need to constantly be aware of the message you’re sending and constantly be striving for minimum confusion and maximum comprehension!

The talent: I have a set-in-steel entrepreneurial bent.  It manifests itself in different ways.

When I was in high school, it meant taking the lead and generating a proposal for funding to network an entire school and get them on high-speed internet to increase the teaching tools available to the staff.

Last term, it manifested itself in my founding of a company and working with the good people at Enterprise Co-op – an experience that I feel was the most amazing and educational thing yet in my tenure at Waterloo.

But above all, it motivates me to look at my surroundings differently than most.  We all ask, “What if?”  I ask, too – and then I set about trying to find the answer, accepting that sometimes the answer may not be what I assumed.
